The Team:

Upstart’s Home Lending Team is tackling the largest credit market in the world, with more than $2 trillion in annual originations. We’re like a startup within a larger company, growing >10x year-over-year as we ship and iterate quickly.  Our first product, a  Home Equity Line of Credit, aims to be the best way for homeowners to borrow money. We offer best-in-class rates, saving borrowers millions a year in excess interest payments. Applicants can apply in minutes, get instantly approved, and get funds in a few days. We say yes to more applicants thanks to ML-powered decisioning and novel data sources. Compare this to an industry-average process that takes 5+ weeks, dozens of documents, thousands of dollars, and denies more than half of all applicants.

The Role:

As Director of Product, HELOC you’ll lead a team of PMs and partner with a cross-functional leadership team  to craft the product strategy and execute on it.  You’ll help us ship a delightfully easy borrower experience while embracing enormous behind-the-scenes complexity, building a system that seamlessly orchestrates software, AI, and human operators. You’ll set and own ambitious goals in Upstart’s fastest growing business, and partner closely with a  team of dedicated cross-functional partners across engineering, design, ML, operations, capital, and growth to hit them.

 

How you’ll make an impact:

Ship best-in-class customer experiences. Obsess over the customer experience. Talk directly with customers, shadow our operations team, and ship some software that delights the customer. Our best leaders are players as well as coaches, able to roll up their sleeves and do the work as well as support their team.Run the product team. Lead a team of high-performing product managers. Develop the repeatable processes we use to learn, plan, ship, and rollout software to customers and operations teams. Coach the team to support them in mastering the craft of product. Unblock them from doing their best work.Craft product strategy and roadmap. Develop deep expertise on our customer, business, and technology. Determine the levers to improve the customer experience and drive profitable growth. Analyze the opportunities, set priorities, and drive alignment across the cross-functional team. Integrate software and operations. Partner with operations leadership to build a loan ‘manufacturing’ process that seamless integrates software, AI, and human operators to serve every customer with the right level of support.Get results. Set  goals, define metrics, set targets, and hit them. Launch new growth channels. Work across product and growth teams to architect the next phase of of our growth, launching new partnership and distribution channels that bring our customer experience to a wider audience.

Minimum Qualifications: 

6+ years of experience in product + 2 years in management, with evidence of creating structure and process that enables the team to repeatedly deliver great resultsCustomer obsessed. You understand the customer and their problems deeply. You talk to them regularly. You obsesses over the details. Track record of shipping great software that delights the customers and grows the businessOwnership and growth mindset. You act like an owner. You’re often right, but humble and open-minded about being wrong. You’re perpetually dissatisfied and striving to improve yourself and the team. Cross-functional execution, working across partners such as engineering, product, ML, analytics, operations, finance, compliance, legal, finance, etc

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with products with a heavy operational component, and integration of software + human support
  • Experience with ML / AI products 

 

Position location This role is available in the following locations: Remote

Time zone requirements The team operates on the East/West coast time zones.


Travel requirements As a digital first company, the majority of your work can be accomplished remotely. The majority of our employees can live and work anywhere in the U.S but are encouraged to to still spend high quality time in-person collaborating via regular onsites. The in-person sessions’ cadence varies depending on the team and role; most teams meet once or twice per quarter for 2-4 consecutive days at a time.

At Upstart, your base pay is one part of your total compensation package.  The anticipated base salary for this position is expected to be within the below range. Your actual base pay will depend on your geographic location–with our “digital first” philosophy, Upstart uses compensation regions that vary depending on location. Individual pay is also determined by job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Your recruiter can share more about the specific salary range for your preferred location during the hiring process.

In addition, Upstart provides employees with target bonuses, equity compensation, and generous benefits packages (including medical, dental, vision, and 401k).

$187,900—$299,000 USD
