About Upstart

At Upstart, we’re united by a mission that matters: to radically reduce the cost and complexity of borrowing for all Americans. Every day, we bring creativity, experimentation, and advanced AI to reshape access to credit, helping millions move forward financially with clarity and confidence.

As the leading AI lending marketplace, we partner with banks and credit unions to expand access to affordable credit through technology that’s both radically intelligent and deeply human. Our platform runs over one million predictions per borrower using more than 3,000 signals, powering smarter, fairer decisions for millions of customers. But the numbers only hint at the impact. Every idea, every voice, and every contribution moves us closer to a world where credit never stands between people and their financial progress.

We’re proudly digital-first, giving most Upstarters the flexibility to do their best work from wherever they thrive, alongside teammates across 80+ cities in the US and Canada. Digital-first doesn’t mean distant. We’re intentional about in-person connection through team onsites, planning sessions, and moments that spark creativity and trust. And whether you choose to work primarily from home or collaborate in-person from one of our offices in Columbus, Austin, the Bay Area, or New York City, you’ll have the support to work in the way that works best for you.

If you’re energized by tackling meaningful problems, excited to innovate with purpose, and motivated by work that truly matters, we’d love to hear from you.

The Team

Upstart’s Product Quality Oversight team builds and operates the first line of defense quality oversight program for unsecured lending, including personal loans, small-dollar loans, and cash line. The team assesses whether lending decisions, disclosures, customer-facing workflows, and servicing outputs operate as intended and meet regulatory and internal policy requirements.

As the Product Quality Manager, Unsecured Lending at Upstart, you will lead end-to-end quality testing for assigned regulatory areas and help shape a scalable, data-driven oversight program. You’ll define risk-based testing coverage, partner with Engineering to design and validate automated monitoring, and work across teams to resolve control gaps. This is an individual contributor role.

How you’ll make an impact

  • Lead testing for assigned regulatory areas from planning through reporting, defining risk-based coverage, sampling approaches, test scripts, and documented conclusions.
  • Set testing priorities and timelines for assigned areas, and coordinate testers' work to meet them.
  • Translate regulatory requirements into testable attributes and criteria; update test scripts and coverage as regulations or products change; and decide when to re-scope testing or seek Compliance or Legal interpretation as facts change.
  • Lead control design walkthroughs to understand the end-to-end process, including dependencies across systems, teams, and third parties; challenge whether controls are designed to address the risk, and set the testing approach.
  • Evaluate whether lending controls operate as intended across origination, servicing, and collections; identify systemic gaps and escalate findings supported by evidence.
  • Partner with Engineering on automated and AI-assisted monitoring requirements, verifying rule logic, testing populations, outputs, and missed exceptions before relying on results.
  • Lead validation after product or process changes, review and reperform testers’ work, and help maintain consistent methods and audit-ready documentation.
  • Translate findings and root causes into actionable recommendations; work with Product, Operations, Compliance, Legal, and Risk to advance remediation and support reviews by second-line testing and Internal Audit.
  • Help improve the oversight program and guide other testers while using approved AI tools responsibly, verifying AI-assisted conclusions against source requirements and manual checks.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in compliance testing, quality control or assurance, internal audit, or regulatory examination in consumer lending.
  • Experience independently designing and leading end-to-end quality or compliance testing for consumer lending products, systems, or transactions.
  • Experience developing and applying risk-based sampling methods, standardized testing criteria, and documented conclusions under consumer financial regulations such as TILA/Reg Z, ECOA/Reg B, FCRA, EFTA/Reg E, FDCPA/Reg F, or UDAAP.
  • Experience analyzing testing populations, control results, or automated monitoring outputs to assess completeness and identify exceptions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of automated lending platforms, digital lending products, or credit decisioning systems.
  • Experience with quality oversight for unsecured installment loans or lines of credit.
  • Experience designing or validating automated or AI-assisted quality monitoring, including checks for missed exceptions.
  • Ability to influence cross-functional remediation and communicate control assessments to stakeholders with different areas of expertise.
  • Certified Regulatory Compliance Manager (CRCM) or a similar compliance certification.
